Candler-McAfee is a census-designated place in unincorporated DeKalb County, Georgia, United States. It is located east of Atlanta[2] approximately 10 miles (16 km) east of Downtown Atlanta and to the south of Decatur, Georgia[3] The population was 23,025 at the 2010 census.[4]

Geography[edit]

Candler-McAfee is located to the east of the city of Atlanta, Georgia[5] and is bounded by:[6]

  • North: Glenwood Avenue
  • West: 2nd Avenue
  • South: I-20
  • East: I-285

The Belvedere Park CDP is to the north and Panthersville CDP is to the south.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 7.0 square miles (18 km2), of which 0.04 square miles (0.10 km2), or 0.29%, is water.

Landmarks[edit]

The area is home to DeKalb Fire Station 26 and its water tower. East Lake Golf Club is on the northern boundary of Candler-McAfee

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 28,294 people, 9,030 households, and 6,926 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 4,054.2 people per square mile (1,565.1/km2). There were 9,415 housing units at an average density of 1,349.0/sq mi (520.8/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 3.31% White, 95.17% African American, 0.20% Native American, 0.15% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.41% from other races, and 0.76% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.93% of the population.

There were 9,030 households, out of which 32.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 36.9% were married couples living together, 33.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 23.3% were non-families. 18.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 3.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.08 and the average family size was 3.46.

In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 28.0% under the age of 18, 10.7% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 25.7% from 45 to 64, and 7.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.7 males.

At the height of the mortgage crisis, in 2007, the CDP poverty rate exploded to 27.5%, one of the highest rates in the country [1]. The years since have seen improvement; the median income for a household in the CDP was $38,152 in recent data as of 2020, and the median income for a family was $40,368. Males had a median income of $30,218 versus $25,887 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $15,092. About 10.9% of families and 13.6% of the population were below the poverty line, including 17.1% of those under age 18 and 14.9% of those age 65 or over.

The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Atlanta operates area Catholic schools. The K-8 school St. Peter Claver Regional School is in Candler-McAfee.[12]

Belvedere Park is a census-designated place (CDP) in DeKalb County, Georgia, United States. The population was 15,152 at the 2010 census.[3]

Geography[edit]

Belvedere Park is located at 33°44′56″N 84°15′35″W / 33.74889°N 84.25972°W / 33.74889; -84.25972 (33.748855, -84.259617).[4] It is bordered by:

History[edit]

Belvedere Park emerged beginning in 1952 as a planned community with schools, parks, and a shopping center. It continued to grow and expand throughout the decade.[5]

Housing tracts[edit]

In 1958, the Atlanta Journal advertised houses in Belvedere Park for between $11,000 and $14,800. One ad proclaimed:

"Buy a Home in Belvedere Park with a 100% GI Loan - A Complete Established Community of Distinction and Quality Convenient to Everything."

A majority of homes in Belvedere Park are one-story and while some are traditional red brick ranch homes, contemporary style houses were also built. Adair Realty and Loan, a powerful real estate company in Atlanta during the early to mid 20th century, represented Belvedere Park.[5]

Belvedere Motel[edit]

The Belvedere Motel, operated by the renowned Dinkler Hotel Corporation, opened with telephones and large screen televisions in every room. The motel claimed to be "dedicated to your traveling comfort" — additional amenities included a playground and a shuffleboard court.[5]

Opening of Rich's[edit]

In 1959, the second branch of Rich's Department Store was opened in the Belvedere Shopping Center (the first branch was opened at Lenox Square Mall). Rich's added an air of metropolitan living to the suburbs.[5]

In 1963, Towers High School was opened and is still in operation today. Midway Park on Midway Road is a popular recreational center. It has several fields for baseball and football and a public swimming pool.[5]

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 18,945 people, 6,524 households, and 4,527 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 3,801.9 people per square mile (1,468.8/km2). There were 7,010 housing units at an average density of 1,406.8/sq mi (543.5/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 13.16% White, 82.38% African American, 0.18% Native American, 0.94% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 1.69% from other races, and 1.62% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.48% of the population.

There were 6,524 households, out of which 35.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 31.7% were married couples living together, 31.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.6% were non-families. 22.6% of all households were made up of individuals, and 4.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.90 and the average family size was 3.43.

In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 30.1% under the age of 18, 10.6% from 18 to 24, 32.6% from 25 to 44, 20.2% from 45 to 64, and 6.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 31 years. For every 100 females, there were 86.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 79.4 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP was $36,144, and the median income for a family was $37,207. Males had a median income of $29,134 versus $26,323 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $15,524. About 14.1% of families and 16.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 23.4% of those under age 18 and 11.3% of those age 65 or over.

Economy[edit]

The community's economy contains Belvedere Plaza, which had the second suburban Rich's department store (after Lenox Square in Atlanta), currently a market for Afro-centric sales products.
