Wondering how to edit this U.S. County Entry?
The WikiProject U.S. Counties standards might help.
Incorporation date[edit]
NaCo is incorrect in its 1779 date. 1779 is when Vermont was created with 2 counties (Cumberland and Bennington). In 1781, Cumberland was split into three, including Windham. Is there any other source that corroborates 1779? The 1781 date is confirmed by several history books ([1] [2] [3] [4] [5] [6]) --Polaron | Talk 03:10, 3 June 2009 (UTC)
- You're right, Vermont was created with Cumberland and Bennington in 1779. In 1781, Cumberland was split into three counties, Orange, Windsor, and Windham. BUT Windham(former Cumberland) was not re-created, but rather renamed in 1781, and its creation date is the same as Cumberland's. That's what I got from NACo.--Crzycheetah 03:21, 3 June 2009 (UTC)

- The fourth link that you provided, also talks about Windham being renamed rather than created. So, some say 1779, while others say 1781. I think we need to state that in both articles.--Crzycheetah 03:33, 3 June 2009 (UTC)
- Couldn't we equally say that Orange or Windsor was Cumberland renamed? Overwhelming weight of the sources provided here seems to say that Windham was newly created, or that Cumberland is extinct — are there any other sources that support the renaming idea? Nyttend (talk) 12:12, 3 June 2009 (UTC)
- I don't think we could say that because the formation year for both Orange and Windsor is 1781, I have not seen any other year anywhere. As for Windham, [9], [10], [11], [12], and [13] state that the county was formed in 1779(the same year Cumberland was formed). Also, [14] has the following blurb: "[on] February 11, 1779, when Cumberland County was changed to Windham County".--Crzycheetah 16:32, 3 June 2009 (UTC)
- Sounds more convincing than before...it would help if the state legislature had enacted a legalese form of "Cumberland County is now Windham County". ````
