Suicide note[edit]
The quote towards the end of the Biography section I think it better to conclude in good time and in erect bearing a life in which intellectual labour meant the purest joy and personal freedom the highest good on Earth has been flagged requiring citation. The original suicide letter can now be found in multiple places (notably here: https://kuenste-im-exil.de/KIE/Content/EN/Objects/zweig-stefan-abschiedsbrief-en.html?single=1, with retranscription on wikisource: https://de.wikisource.org/wiki/Abschiedsbrief_Stefan_Zweigs) a translation is offered here: http://web.nli.org.il/sites/NLI/English/collections/personalsites/archive_treasures/Pages/stefan-zweig.aspx. Not being a native German speaker, I can't vouch for the quality of the translation. The line referred to in particular is slightly different, here's another one that's closer: https://www.thejc.com/news/world/stefan-zweig-s-suicide-note-posted-online-1.31881. In any case could a native-level German speaker check that the quote reflects the original text and cite (or attach) the original note? Thibaut Lienart (talk) 05:42, 10 July 2017 (UTC)
- Blimey. Despite my ermmmm interest in this author I had not seen this before - the note is heartbreaking ... so many crossings-out! What does it say about your state of mind when writing something like this? Holey Moley. ThibautLienart, I'm really sorry you had to wait such a long time for a reply, and it looks worryingly as if you might have stopped editing here or at least be having a pause. I will try and have a careful look at this; realistically it might not be immediate (like, not before Christmas, sorry to say) but I will have a go. I am not a native German speaker but I do speak the odd word or two, and I know plenty of people who speak rather a lot more ... I'll try. Thanks and best wishes DBaK (talk) 19:01, 28 November 2017 (UTC)
- Don't worry for the delay, and I don't think there's any rush here. On a personal note I use WP almost every day but seldom suggest edits as I'm always a bit worried to do so in areas where I have little expertise. I often prefer to suggest good references that people with more expertise / knowledge may find useful to improve an article in their own time. In this case, I was reading on Zweig after watching "farewell to europe" and found the notes mentioned above. Note that, incidentally, they briefly discuss the translation from German to Portuguese in the film. Best wishes Thibaut Lienart (talk) 22:02, 28 November 2017 (UTC)

Date format[edit]
It's not that important but I don't agree with the date format swap and would like to change it back to 28 November 2017 etc. The article is about an Austrian who lived in the UK quite a bit and in the US a lot less. The article was started by a British editor and the US style date only crept in later when added by a HK IP address. Can I swap back to d/m/y please? Best wishes DBaK (talk) 09:11, 28 November 2017 (UTC)
- +1 -- Michael Bednarek (talk) 09:49, 28 November 2017 (UTC)
- @DisillusionedBitterAndKnackered and Michael Bednarek: I agree with both of you. I've templated the article for EngvarB citing MOS:RETAIN and WP:TIES as it was not written using any evident spelling variant. Outside of the inception of the article, the history of the development of the article clearly indicates that the far more universal date format (dmy) was adopted. Given the arguments for MOS:TIES (and that I was extremely reticent to change the many instances of dmy), I'm going to change the format to the consensus format per WP:IAR. If any editors disagree with this preference, they're welcome to argue their objections here. --Iryna Harpy (talk) 19:06, 28 November 2017 (UTC)
- Gosh. Iryna Harpy Too kind, simply too kind! I am not accustomed to this ... why are we not having a massive row and accusing each other of Terrible Things like wot I am used to? I'm not sure I can cope with this! :) Thanks so much DBaK (talk) 19:14, 28 November 2017 (UTC)
- I'll respond as soon as I've had a strong cup of tea and a lie down... 'Tis a rare occasion, indeed! I'd like to believe that COMMONNSENSE prevailed, but such civility between editors is (almost) one for the books. Wouldn't it be lovely if Wikipedia worked this way more often. --Iryna Harpy (talk) 19:33, 28 November 2017 (UTC)
